Behind the Scenes of the NoMU June Recipe Cards Shoot!

Last Friday we were once again plunged into the happy chaos that is the NoMU Recipe Cards shoot, with a flurry of cooking and children and dogs under foot, it’s always a busy atmosphere in the kitchen this time of the month! With family favourites the theme for June, we were delightedly tucking into sticky pork ribs, lamb knuckle stew with creamy mash and chocolate fondants with great gusto (everyone needs a little insulation padding for winter!).

Behind the Scenes of the NoMU SMEG Master Cllass with Neill Anthony!

Last week when the winter chill started to spread through Cape Town, we were lucky enough to be elbow to elbow with knowledgeable foodies, friends and food lovers alike watching Neill Anthony serve up his culinary skills at the NoMU SMEG Master Cllass in Cape Town! With a scrumptious menu of oak smoked trout, shaved pickled beetroot salad with horse radish chantilly and toasted brioche, slow cooked herb crusted beef fillet and market vegetables with prune and armagnac sponge and creme fraiche for dessert – plus lashings of wine courtesy of Andre Pentz there was no place better to be on a Wednesday night!

Uh oh. The SA Food Bloggers Indaba has asked me to do what?

I’m not sure at what point I did something right to score the honour of being asked to MC South Africa’s premiere (and definitely most loved) Food Blogger’s Indaba. It must have been all that Chicken FOND I have been bribing people with for the last two years. Who knows?

The fact is that the incredible and unswervingly sweet Colleen and Donald Grove have asked me to present the event as MC which will take place on Sunday, the 24th June in the PnP Head Office Conference Centre in Kenilworth, Cape Town.

My brief appears to be make a joke or two and try to avoid being too, um, ‘Roger Sterling’. This last part may be practically impossible. I have warned them but they appear to be undeterred. Can’t imagine what that must have been drinking when they thought I was a good idea…

(Walks over to drinks cabinet and pours a conspicuously heavy draft of whisky)

Cherryflava ruins our Big Mac and fries, and we’re happy about it.

I just saw this on Cherryflava where a far more articulate opinion is presented overall. What we do want to add though is that, as parents, we find this sort of thing chilling. We can’t wait to make as many people as possible watch this. Here’s why…

Another movie we won’t be comfortable watching: This is 40

So, here is a momentary interruption of your day to share yet another movie that will be coming out soon, proving again that all the funniest people in Hollywood must currently be in the utter depths of their own personal mid-life crisis.

And why not? I can tell you from my own, personal ‘depths’ of suburban bliss that this movie looks entirely too close to the bone. That’s notwithstanding (I’m thrilled to add) the last bit at the end, involving the tiny vanity mirror and the torch.

Oh no. Not quite gotten there yet. Besides, I’m only 37. Tracy is 32, or seems to have been, for about 8 years.

Shush you. Keep quiet. It’s better that way. Thanks.

NoMU Reviews: A Food Lover’s Pilgrimage to Santiago De Compostela by Dee Nolan

Our April featured cookbook was A Food Lover’s Pilgrimage to Santiago De Compostela by Dee Nolan and was somewhat of a different book to our usual pick. This is a stunningly beautiful book with incredible photography and the detailed journey of  Dee Nolan through the through the rich farming lands of southern France and northern Spain.

Nolan’s own emotional journey along the route to De Santiago takes her back to the very heart of things: why we should care about what we eat and how it is produced, why we need escapes like the pilgrimage in our busy modern lives, and why she found herself, after a long career in publishing, back on her grandfather’s farm and connecting with the soil.

While the book itself is less of a recipe book and more about an incredible journey through some of the most memorable food experiences along the Camino, it’s definitely a book to be coveted. Whether you be a passionate foodie or an experienced traveller, you’ll certainly find inspiration in the culture and tradition of this thousand year old pilgrimage.
